La Danza
A 10 year evolving work in film, sound, and movement.
2022-2032 (in progress)
La Danza began as a short film created for an online filmmaking challenge. The filmmakers were given the prompt:
We shot the film over two frigid nights in January 2022.
La Danza (short 2022)
After releasing the short, I realized something unexpected: what we had made was only a seed. A fragment of a much larger vision. The story wanted to grow. I imagined a stranger, more expansive film, one that echoed René Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy and fused genre cinema with the sensibilities of Maya Deren, Kenneth Anger, and Slavko Vorkapich.
So production continued.
Throughout 2022, La Danza became the most creatively fulfilling work I had made. And once we began editing, more possibilities appeared and it was clear that what we had completed was only another seed.
I shared this evolving vision with my primary collaborator, Raquel Amezcua, and together we committed to its future. This was the moment The La Danza Project emerged.
It is now an expansive, decade-long film, shot gradually over ten years. Each year, Raquel and I reunite to capture new material, growing the work piece by piece. The project is living, shifting, and perpetually unfinished (for now).
